Allergy to poison oak, ivy and sumac is the most common allergy in the United States (about 50%). It is caused by a sensitivity to urushiol, a sticky resin-like substance found in all parts of the plants. This allergy can develop any time in one's life. The number of times an individual is exposed to urushiol, the greater the chances of developing a sensitivity.
An allergy to poison oak, ivy, or sumac causes an itching, blistering rash. Initially home treatment of natural baths, calamine lotion, etc. is recommended. Medications prescribed are oral antihistamines for itching, topical steroids to reduce inflammation, oral steroids such as prednisone in severe cases, and oral antibiotics for infection. Needless to say, all of these drugs have unpleasant and unwanted side effects.
The aloe in Corium 21 is effective because of the analgesics for pain and itching, the antiseptic agents to fight infection, and the anti-inflammatory agents. The degree to which Corium 21 reduces the itching initially is often quite dramatic, as well as the effect of the aloe over a period of a few hours. Many have reported miracle results with Corium 21 applied to the affected areas.
