In the mid-nineteenth century, men working on early oil rigs noticed a dense substance forming on the rigs. Often this substance interfered with proper functioning of the machinery. Aside from this fact, they started applying it to cuts and other skin abrasions acquired while working. Observing a soothing effect and expedited healing, the substance was later chemically refined and sold commercially as a skin soothing and healing product. It is also commonly knows as petroleum jelly. |
