What Is Glycerin Really?

Glycerin is a neutral, sweet-tasting, colorless, thick liquid which has a high boiling point and freezes to a gummy paste. Glycerin can be dissolved into water or alcohol, but not oils. In addition, many things will dissolve into glycerin easier than they do into water or alcohol. It is a very good solvent.

Glycerin is highly "hygroscopic". This means that it can absorb water from the air. Did you know that if you left a bottle of pure glycerin exposed to the air that it would take moisture from the air? It would eventually become 80 percent glycerin and 20 percent water.

This hygroscopic quality is one of reasons glycerin is so good for your skin. It attracts moisture from the air. In its 100 percent pure form, glycerin is dehydrating. But mixed with water, however, it will soften your skin.
