Bedsores progress rapidly to dangerous stages. They begin with an area of skin that persistently itches or hurts. This goes away when pressure is relieved. Eventually this area turns to blisters or what appears to be an abrasion. This is followed by a deeper crater-like wound. A severe stage is when there is actual widespread loss of skin with damage to bone, muscle, tendons and joints.
